Mike Renaud is a 39 year old father,
husband, coach and commissioner of the St. Clair Shores Softball
Association. At the end of the 2003 softball season team pool party for the
undefeated 12/ under girls team that he coached, Mike suffered a life
altering injury that left him paralyzed from neck down.
Mike has triumphed over the odds thus
far, he was initially ventilator dependent, and suffered 13 cardiac arrests
in the weeks following his accident. His strong will, determination,
attitude, faith and support network is why he continues to be an inspiration
to many.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for
paralysis. In addition, because of the controversial stem-cell debate in the
United States advancements are not being made here. However, there is a
world-renowned neurosurgeon in Portugal, who is performing an adult stem
cell transplant in which stem cells from ones own nose are being
transplanted into the spinal cord with very promising results. This surgery
has been featured on PBS- Miracle Cells, CNN-Larry King Live, and the
Detroit Free Press.
It is also being supported by the DMC-
Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center. In
fact, they are working with patients to provide aggressive therapy after
having the surgery in Portugal.
This surgery is very costly and is not
covered by insurance, but it offers something not available to Mike and the
250,000 other Americans suffering from paralysis- hope.
Hope for a better quality of life, hope
for greater independence, hope for recovery.
