Camarderie and Oktoberfest tradition at the DASV Schützenpark

Siegfried Arndt, of the DASV, takes careful aim during the rifle competition

Auburn Hills The German-American Marksmen's Club (DASV) in Auburn Hills began Saturday, the 23rd of September with a marksmanship competition between themselves and the Schützen of the Detroit Kolping Society. This competition has been a tradition between these two fraternities for many years. The competition consists of a 1st and 2nd team from each club competing for the right to take home their respective traveling trophies for the year. Each marksman (ten per team) shoots twice and their scores are then added together to see who has won. This year's shoot was split, with the Detroit Kolping Society winning the 1st Team" competition and the D.A.S.V. Schützen capturing the prize in 2nd Team" contest. Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon shooting. More important than this yearly competition is the fellowship and camaraderie that is celebrated each time these long standing clubs come together.

Later that afternoon, the Kolping Society as well as the general public joined the D.A.S.V. in celebrating that great yearly tradition: Oktoberfest." The weather did little to dampen the partying mood. The Rheinländer performed in the Schützenhaus (transformed into a Bierhalle for the evening) for those who wanted to dance or sit and enjoy the music. Great tasting German food, beer and Jägermeister was served for everyone to enjoy. Outside, people could relax and enjoy the fresh air while eating, drinking and conversing. There were two shooting booths open for everyone's entertainment. One provided the opportunity for youngster, and the young at heart, to win flowers and stuffed animals and in the other one could try and win a variety of logo items, sponsored by Jägermeister and the DASV. This traditional festive event was a success even despite the weather. Many who attended this year are already looking forward to next year to once again celebrate the great tradition of Oktoberfest.

Another tradition, which has been celebrated for hundreds of years in Germany and since 1939 at the German-American Marks-men's Club, is coming this October 28th. This annual traditional event is the Schützen Königsball, which celebrates the crowning of the new King of the DASV, King Dennis Hogan. This Semi-formal event will be held at the Carpathia Hall in Sterling Heights. There will be a ceremony for the new King, Dinner and then Dancing. Katie and Arnold of the Vagabonds will be performing the music for the evening. Everyone is invited to attend and celebrate another one of Germany's time honored traditions. Ticket prices are $28 in advance and $30 at the door. For advanced ticket purchases call Mark Bliszack at 1-248-698-4468.
