Celebration and Open House at Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit

Ganz wie in Deutschland: Die 1. Klasse mit ihren Schultüten.

The Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit will host its annual Open House on Monday, January 25, 2010 from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm at its Niles Center location in Troy, 201 W. Square Lake Road (19 Mile Road) just west of Livernois.

We are also celebrating our new relationship with the Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (Center for German Programs Abroad).  Since October 2009, we are now offering American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) tests and “das Deutsche Sprachdiplom” (the German Language Diploma) offered by the Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen.  We are very pleased to have met the ZfA’s standards in such a short time and showcase the high quality standards of our curriculum and school.

It has been a very busy year at the Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit.  Our 1st graders celebrated the 1st day of school with colorful, filled “Schultüten” donated to us by KinderCone.  We would like to thank Vivian Lie of KinderCone for her generous donation to our school.

In early October, the German-American Chamber of Commerce celebrated the German Unity Day which commemorated the fall of the Wall 20 years ago. Our students Julia (6th Grade) and Phillip (5th grade) were outstanding representatives for the DSMD.  Both students presented their thoughts on the reunification of East and West Germany.  Julia’s presentation “Mauerfall” and Philip’s presentation “Was bedeutet die Deutsche Einheit“ highlighted the higher level skills of presentation and public speaking which the DSMD strives to provide their students.

The year continued with our Sankt Martin celebration on a mild November evening.  Several of our students performed a play outside on the school’s playground called “Kleines Singspiel zu St. Martin”.  It was such a treat to watch the children walk with their beautifully decorated lanterns aglow in the moonlight singing Sankt Martin songs.  The children enjoyed soft pretzels, “Zwiebelkuchen” and hot chocolate afterwards while enjoying traditional live music.

Early December, Sankt Nikolaus came all the way from Germany to visit with all of our students.  We ended 2009 with our “Weihnachtsfeier” on December 14th.  Every DSMD class prepared a Christmas play.  Our students knew their lines and performed wonderfully.  Our parents and students enjoyed the afterglow with pizzas, salads and desserts.  Our next performance will take place at our “Abschlussfeier” at the end of the school year. These events give our students valuable public speaking experience and provide a venue in which they can use their language skills in an actual performance setting outside of the classroom.  Following the programs, an afterglow allows families to meet and spend time with one another, building a true sense of community within the school.

The DSMD’s New Year has begun.  The excitement will continue with our Open House on Monday, January 25, 2010 and the Kinderfasching celebration hosted by the German American Cultural Center on Sunday, February 14th at the Carpathia Hall.

The DSMD prides itself in giving our students the opportunity to learn from cultural and traditional events, as well as the traditional classroom learning. Our German language program is based on the Bavarian curriculum, and our German as a foreign language program follows the Common European Framework guidelines. All of our teachers are qualified, degreed, professional teachers.

If you or your children are interested in learning the German language, you are welcome to stop by, tour our school and enjoy light refreshments in a relaxed environment at our Open House.
