Not even a blustery snowstorm could stop the Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit's
students from performing their Christmas songs and plays. As part of the
course curriculum of Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit, students at the school
are expected to learn songs and skits for the Christmas Program, which takes
place on the last school day of the year. This program allows children to
learn the German language and experience some of the rich German culture as
well. Students also gain the invaluable experience of speaking and singing
in front of a large audience. The audience is mostly comprised of proud
parents, grandparents and relatives, who can hardly wait to see their
children become stars for the day.
Having a snow day and time off from school is usually a fun day for kids of
all ages. But that was not the case when the DSMD Weihnachtsfeier" was
cancelled on December 17, 2007 because of bad weather conditions caused by a
snowstorm. After all of their hard work of memorizing and learning their
parts, the Christmas spirits of the students were deflated, when they found
out that they would not be able to perform. With perseverance and some
changes to the program, however, it only meant that the children had to wait
a few weeks, until they could have their fun on stage.
On
January 7th, 2008, the Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit welcomed the New Year
with its New Year 2008 Celebration at their location at the Niles Center in
Troy on 201 W. Square Lake Road (19 Mile Road) just west of Livernois.
Students were able to celebrate the New Year with a little bit of Christmas
spirit. The program began at 5:30 pm, with a warm welcome and introduction
from Regina Weiss, the school's Director of Curriculum and Christina
Griesser, the Director of Operations.
Each teacher introduced her class to the audience and then proceeded with
the Christmas skits and songs. Parents expressed great joy as they watched
their children on stage. The students had fun presenting their plays like:
Die Vier Lichter des Hirten Simon, Tanzlied zu Weihnachten, Kling Glöckchen,
Sternentanz, das Spielzeugauto, Weihnachtsrätseln, and Pfefferkuchenhaus".
The program concluded with Richard Gerhardt leading students and parents
with his accordion to some favorite holiday songs. Students were then
treated to a pizza party with salad and cake. Each child also received a
prize, which was donated to the school by Lufthansa German Airlines.
