Excitement at the Carpathia Jäger König Competition

2008/09 Jäger King Paul Tittjung with Jäger President Tom Forest

By Monica Forest

Sterling Heights With camaraderie but competition, the Carpathia Jäger held their annual trap shooting event to determine their king. The September 21st event also included a picnic for the families, so each shooter had a big cheering section. After an exciting competition, Paul Tittjung is the new Jäger König.

Unlike skeet where the targets always fly in the same direction, trap shooting targets fly at random angles and the shooter must shoot from five different stations. Then, in the second round, the shooter is handicapped based on the first round's score. In Paul's case, he had a perfect 25 in the first round, so he had to shoot his second round from the 25 yard line, the furthest position. Even shooting from the 25 yard line, Paul Tittjung pulled off the win. Cheers, handshakes and hugs from friends and family started the celebration, but the competition was not over yet.

The excitement continued with a tie score for 1st and 2nd Ritter. To break the tie, Ed Speckhardt and Jeff Ewald ended up in a shoot-off. Then, they tied again in the shoot-off! This brought the competition to a sudden death round. In sudden death, each person takes one shot from each station until one person misses a bird. Sudden death matches are extremely tense especially when shooters are so evenly matched. During these stages of the competition, the sport is as much mental focus as physical skill. In the end, Ed Speckhardt took 1st Ritter and Jeff Ewald is the 2nd Ritter.

To top things off, Eric Rausch and John Klimach also had a shoot-off that went to sudden death. After the second exciting match, Eric took 1st trophy and John has the 2nd trophy. In this close competition, Steve Homann earned the third trophy with his good shooting. To everyone else, keep practicing!

This is Paul Tittjung's second time as king. I'm on the every-ten-year plan," he jokes. Even though Junior Jäger (teens) are now joining the group, the new king also captured the title as the most senior person to win king. In the last shoot of the day, John Klimach won the Past King's trophy which brought the competition to a close.

To celebrate, König Paul and Königin Madga formally invite you to the Jäger Königsball on October 11th, 2008. The Jäger Königsball is an elegant evening that includes a buffalo and schnitzel dinner, wild game appetizers and an international wine tasting. Because so many people were interested, the buffalo is a new entrée this year. You don't have to be a Jaeger to enjoy good food, good music and a good time at the Königsball. Tickets are only $18 and can be ordered from Maria Dosenberger at (586) 822-2366.

If trap shooting competitions sound interesting to you, or if you enjoy hunting and the outdoors, consider meeting the Carpathia Jäger. Feel free to call Tom Forest, the Jäger President, at (586) 781-4505 for more information. Hope to see you soon.
