Detroit Schwaben Unterstützungs-Verein:  What a great Family Picnic

It was a Sunday, the members and guests who were at this year's picnic will not soon forget. There was Bratwurst to eat and plenty to drink! Thanks to all members who brought a dish to accompany the Bratwurst. Also thanks to the volunteers who helped set up and clean up afterwards. President Rosch opened the picnic with a speech and thanked all people involved in the event; especially Walter Rothenberger who manned the BBQ with his helper Frank Fink.

We welcomed guests from the Toledo Schwaben Verein; President Herman Schmalzried, Secretary Dick Langendorfer and Frank Fink; from the Schwäbische Männerchor we welcomed Jim and Pat Fitch; and our "Ehrenpräsident" Fritz Mohr and his wife Betty.

The members enjoyed the camaraderie and interaction with each other. The picnic as far as I can see was a success. Thanks again to all helpers.

But now to another of our events, which I neglected to put into the paper. In March we celebrated our 124th year of existence with a banquet. The Carpathia Kitchen served a delicious dinner, as always. Tommy Schober and his Sorgenbrecher Band played dance music for everyone's taste. Our guests at the banquet were: from Toledo Schwaben Verein Herman Schmalzried, President; Dick Langendorfer, Secretary; and Frank and Irene Fink; from Ann Arbor Schwaben Verein John and Inge Jarvis, Vice President; from the Schwäbische Männerchor Jim and Pat Fitch, President and from the German American Cultural Center were Joe and Helen Gassel, Vice President. Red Hardt, our member from Toledo, brought his friends along Amy Pullen, Vern Basilius, Frank and Mary Matyas. Once the meal was over the speeches began. They were short and to the point. President Rosch in his speech honored two members for 50 years of membership Walter Aupperle and Helmut Lillich. Walter Aupperle was present to accept his certificate and pin. Lisa Gerstheimer was honored for 25 years of membership with a certificate. Congratulations to the three members.

On Sunday, April 22nd, 2007 we had our quarterly meeting at the Carpathia Hall. We were able to induct four new members into our club: Christine Jarrell and Susan Wieland daughters to Joseph Wieland; and Bob and Eleanor Gracier. Welcome.

Our next big function will be in October; so everyone mark this date on your calendar. Sunday, October 28th, 2007 in the afternoon will be our HALLOWEEN PARTY.

We welcome any new members. For more information call President Hubert Rosch, Tel. (586) 2647505 or Secretary Lisa Gerstheimer, Tel. (586) 7735336.
