The Michigan State Music Hall of Fame, Inc. has just
announced the recipients for the Polka Music" category, to be inducted in
early 2007. This year six recipients of German Heritage will be honored. The
recipients are:
1.
Horst & Erika Buller - DJ's for many years on Detroit Radio Station, WMZK
and WPON, Pontiac, Michigan. Horst always was a Band Leader of the Melodias
who played for many years at the Strauss Ball at Cobo Hall in Detroit as
well as many German festivals and dances. Erika also sang with the band. The
Melodias recorded three albums.
2.
Richard (Dick) Wagner - Band Leader of the Detroit German Band - Die
Rhinelanders, since its inception. They have recorded five albums. Die
Rhinelanders have been featured at the Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival and
Dinner Shows for many years. They have also played many other festivals and
dances in the Michigan, Ohio and Indiana areas.
3.
George Kurtz (Deceased) - Founder/Owner of the Alt Heidelberg Restaurant in
Mt. Clemens, Michigan and was the first in Michigan to sponsor a truly
German Oktoberfest which continued for many years in Mt. Clemens. As a
restaurant owner/operator, he featured many German bands for entertainment
over the years.
4.
Marianne Rauer - DJ and Polka Promoter in the Ann Arbor area. She had a
German Polka show on WPAG, Ann Arbor, Michigan and moved to WNZK, Detroit
and a for a brief period in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her German Polka
Radio show.
5.
Adam Medel - Promoter of German Heritage and Culture through his many years
of leading German dance groups in the Detroit area. He also was responsible
for bringing into the area, many German Bands direct from Germany. More
recently he has become the Club Manager of the Carpathia Club in Sterling
Heights, Michigan.
6.
Ulrich (Uli) & Gisela Kirstein - DJ's for many years on local Detroit Radio
Stations with a German Polka show. Uli is also a musician and has played
with many of the local German bands.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2007
at the Carpathia Hall, 38000 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, Michigan with a
German dinner, presentation ceremony and dancing to the sounds of Tommy
Schober and the Sorgenbrechers. Tickets will be available after January 25,
2007 from Tina (Kurtz) as well as all other recipients at a cost of $30.00
per person or call the Carpathia Hall at (586) 978-2292. Complete
biographies will be forthcoming in a later issue as well as a detailed
advertisement.
