Eastern Germany
continues to prove its innovative leadership in the use of renewable
energies. According to a dpa-article of October 26th the first ever
Geothermic Forum" opened last month in Neubrandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The forum's mission is to accelerate the use of geothermic energy to replace
oil and gas for the heating of residential and commercial facilities by
educating interested energy companies in the wide application of geothermic
energy.
The potential of
geothermic energy as part of the four columns of future renewable energies"
(wind, solar, bio and geothermic energies) seems to be widely unknown.
According to the Geothermic Society of Germany (Geothermische Vereinigung
Deutschland), every day earth sends four times the amount of energy into
space that we use on this planet. The geothermic energy is located under the
planet's crust of our planet. Its heat increases dramatically the further
you get under the surface. The energy organization Verivox sees a tremendous
energy potential within our planet, since the temperatures rise up to 170°
Celsius in a distance of 4000 meters.
According to a
newsletter of Verivox (www.verivox.de), worldwide production of electricity
from geothermal energy has already reached 8000 megawatts, most widely used
so far in Japan, New Zealand and Central America. A study conducted by a
geothermic research center in Potsdam, near Berlin, reports that 29% of the
household heat in Germany could be covered by geothermic energy alone. This
would significantly reduce the dependency on expensive oil and gas.
Currently only 90,000 households in Germany use this energy, according to a
dpa-article of November 16th, 2005.
This article is
part of our series about alternative energies in conjunction with the
upcoming conference in Detroit BIOFUELS 2005 - TRANSPORTING RENEW-ABLES INTO
THE FUTURE", to be held at the Detroit Athletic Club on Tuesday, November
29th, 2005, 8:30am-4:00pm. The conference is organized by the German
American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest in association with the German
Energy Agency (DENA) and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor (BMWA).
This conference
offers the rare opportunity to communicate with key speakers from well-known
companies of Germany's biofuel industry. The presence of these industry
representatives also allows the participants to evaluate mutual
collaborations for new biofuel projects in the United States and Germany. In
light of the current energy problems we are facing around the globe the
timing of the conference could not have been better chosen.
For further
information and registration please contact the initiator and coordinator of
the conference, H. Juergen Hess at the Chicago office of the German American
Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest:
