Germania Downriver

Brownstown Sunday, August 28th was a gorgeous, sunny day for this event. From our youngest members, the Cervantes three-month old twin girls Sofia and Lucinda, to those of more vintaged status, the front lawn at the club, which was so perfectly manicured by Walter Bayko, was the scene of Germania's first picnic in several years. The Bonk, Rickert and Gornyecz families were represented in great numbers by three generations. The event, which was spier-headed by several board members, gained assistance from James Gould, Ingrid Derwoed-Wiseman, Jim Derwoed and Helga Ludlam. Frank Hess was busy serving beverages. Food was plentiful with snacks, salads and desserts provided by our members including the famous specialty pastries by Magdalene Jung. With clean up, Doris Kautz, Kathy Baganz, Denise Lucas, Louise Downey and Harry Pankratz pitched in. As we say auf Deutsch: Viele Hände machen schnell ein Ende." Everyone had a ball with the Water Balloon Toss and did not mind getting soaked". The winners were Sabine and Steve Aytes. Actually, Vern Speer even had fun filling the many balloons. The children thoroughly enjoyed the Egg Throw. Our little winners, Julian Aytes and Mercedes Cervantes were exuberant that their egg did not crack. Laughter and smiles were prevalent among the participants, the Zuschauer" and the fun-loving children dashing across the lawn. Lisa Hughes added to the Stimmung" with her accordion. As folks were leaving, we heard many comments of Danke Schön, Aufwiedersehen, same place, and same time, next Year?"
