Sterling Heights The Detroit
Saxons held a Speck & Zwieble" picnic on Saxon Acres, Utica Road (1/4 mile
east of Carpathia Club) on Saturday July 21st, 2007. The picnic was very
well attended, and many guests learned more about the Transylvanian Saxons,
our traditions and our property.
Last week, we had over eighty-six (86) people, and nearly a dozen children.
We had a basketball challenge game, sponsored by Coca-Cola of Detroit,
horseshoes and badminton.
A
special thank you to all who helped out with cooking. Winters Sausage
Company prepared an awesome fresh hungarian sausage, to go with knackwurst,
bratwurst, bockwurst, hot dogs, and yes" hamburgers, etc.. Winters was our
supplier of choice, and did a wonderful job!
People ask, Was ist das, ,Speck"?" Research shows many types and varieties
of Speck. We had both true Zigeuner Speck" and also Ham Speck"
(double-smoked, extra-thick cut bacon). All food was cooked over open fire,
in true Heimatland tradition.
True, authentic, Transyl-vanian Ale" was brewed especially for our picnic by
The Great Baraboo Brewery of Sterling Heights. Thank you! This was something
most all our guests treasured and relished with passion. Most folks said,
Hey, this is a truly European bier!" There were ZERO complaints. Yes," the
beer came in barrels. (What else?)
Guests attending our picnic represented the following groups:
Austrian Society, Branch 37 Detroit Saxons, Carpathia Club, Chezk Society,
Deutsch-Ameri-kanischer Schützen Verein, Donau-schwaben Cleveland, German
American Cultural Center, GBU Saxonia Gemischter Chor, Polish American
Cultural Center and the Swiss Society.
All details, supplies, and coordination were performed by Johnnie Schemmel
and George Schemmel, Jr.
Picnic is free" to our guests, and a free-will donations to the club are
appreciated!
Thanks again to all our supporters who came out!!!
