Detroit Schwaben UnterstützungsVerein

Sterling Heights On Sunday, October 30, 2005 the Detroit Schwaben UnterstützungsVerein held their first ,Halloween Party' at the Carpathia Hall. The hall was beautifully decorated in a true Halloween theme. Some of the tables were decorated with cauldrons filled with goodies for the children's Trick or Treat. Thanks to AnnaMaria Mapes and her helpers, John and Jane Horlacher, Vera Lottholz, Lisa Gerstheimer, Hubert Rosch and the littlest helper Christopher Mapes (Anna Maria's son); the impressively decorated hall promised a wonderful party.

At 3pm the guests started to arrive; adults and the children, who each received a bag that they could use to collect their treats. President Rosch greeted all the guests, young and somewhat older, and wished them an enjoyable afternoon. By that time all the children were ready to celebrate. Tommy Schober and the Sorgenbrecher managed to entertain everybody with their selection of melodies. All the guests enjoyed Weisswurst, Bratwurst, Hot dogs, buns, Potato Salad and Coleslaw. Following, the Sorgenbrecher played several numbers for the willing and able to make good use of the dance floor. Now it was time for the Trick or Treat. The children lined up and snaked their way through in between tables to the ones with the cauldrons to receive their treats. Some of the children were so excited that they forgot which table they had already visited or overlooked. It was a wonderful sight to see the joy in the eyes of the costumed children hoarding their treasures. Amongst the presents they also received some noisemakers (horns). It did not take them long to make use of that gift and what a noise it was. After a while everybody calmed down. Next was the parade for the best child costume. The band were the judges and had a difficult time to pick a winner. Finally the winners were announced. First price went to the SCREAMER", Brandon, grandchild of Karl and Margot Wendrich. The runner up was the PRINCESS", Julia, daughter of Andrew and Christina Griesser. This was followed by the parade for the adults which gave us the following result. The winner THE SCARECROW", Vera Lottholz, runner up was the SHEIK". After a few moments of relaxing music by the Sorgenbrecher the time had come to pick the best carved pumpkin. The prizes went to the Wendrich grandchildren. Everyone enjoyed a great afternoon. Several guests, as they were saying their goodbyes, asked our president if we are going to have another Halloween Party next year, to which he replied with an enthusiastic and resounding OF COURSE". So now you know you have a year's time to prepare a costume. We'd like to thank all of you that came out and joined us, members and guests, for this funfilled afternoon. Looking forward to greet you next year for an even better Halloween Afternoon Party",
