Sterling Heights – The Detroit Schwaben
Unterstützungs- Verein celebrated it’s 122nd Anniversary with a wonderful
banquet at the Carpathia Hall on Sunday, March 6, 2005.
It is
not every day that a Verein (Club) can look back at 122 years of history and
not have changed its Principles and Goals. We are one of the oldest Vereine
in the Detroiter Area. Our club has seen some ups and downs over the Years.
I’m sure some of you readers will remember the „Schwaben Park“. Yes, that
was our park where thousands of people enjoyed many picnics on weekends
sponsored by the various organizations.
But
back to the 122th Anniversary Banquet. President Mohr greeted the guests
from local organizations as well as our friends from
Toledo
and Ann Arbor. This was followed by Mrs. Mohr reciting a prayer. Then the
afternoon began with a delicious family style dinner prepared by the Ladies
of the Carpathia Club. Guests and members enjoyed a well prepared meal that
did deserve some praise.
After
the culinary enjoyment President Mohr thanked everyone who came to celebrate
this day with us and introduced the New Board members for the year 2005.
In our
midst were the above mentioned friends from the Toledo Schwaben Verein
President Hermann Schmalzried and wife Maria; their Secretary Frank Fink and
wife Irene. From the Ann Arbor Schwaben Verein were - President Art French
and wife Kathy, And Walter and Frances Aupperle. No representation from the
Detroit Schwaben Verein due to Illness. President Mohr greeted the President
of the Schwäbische Männerchor - Tim Reiter; and from the German
American Cultural Center 1st. Vice
President Joseph Gassel and wife Helen.
Then
Mr. Mohr handed the microphone to the newly elected President Hubert Rosch,
who also thanked everyone for attending this banquet. He thanked Fritz Mohr
for the many Years of being president. This was followed with a presentation
of a Diploma that elevated Mr. Mohr to the „Ehren Präsident“ of the Verein
and he also was given an engraved watch for this occasion. For the first
time I saw Fritz Mohr surprised. He was pinned with a boutonniere and Mrs.
Mohr received a corsage with heartfelt thanks for their work with the Verein.
Tommy
Schober and the „Sorgenbrecher“ played music for everyone’s pleasure. Some
of the children from the Carpathia Youth group could not resist dancing the
polkas to Tommy’s music.
Everybody in attendance had a wonderful time.
