Lake Villa Wearing her Dirndl, Illinois State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka joined 500 of her German Americans friends at the annual Schlachtfest sponsored by the American Aid Society of German Descendents held at the German Cultural Center in Lake Villa on November 6, 2005.

In her keynote remarks, Topinka congratulated the Jugendgruppe on their fine performance and presented a proclamation of achievement to Ron Farland & Renee Stein, directors of the Jugendgruppe. The youth group not only won third place during the national folk dance competition, but they also won the congeniality award in national competition held in Anaheim this past summer.

It's refreshing to see young people who want to continue the customs of their heritage by participating in these activities," Topinka said. These young people give a lot of their free time rehearsing their program so it's truly wonderful to see such a positive outcome."

The Schlachtfest is an annual celebration sponsored by the American Aid Society of German Descendents where traditional German food such as goulash, bratwurst and stuffed cabbage are served family style. After enjoying the heavy meal, guests worked off the extra calories by dancing to live music.
