The NorthAmerican
Federation of German Folk Dance Groups is planning its 13th annual folk
dance/folklore weekend on August 4th6th 2006. The event will be hosted by
Folklore Village Farms, Dodgeville, Wisconsin.
The focus of this
weekend will be the dance and folklore of Switzerland. Instructors will be
Johannes and Nina SchmidKunz, specialists in the dance traditions and
customs of the various Swiss Cantons. Both are lifelong folk dancers and
well known as master teachers both in Switzerland and neighboring European
countries. Mr. SchmidKunz is the editor of ,Tracht und Brauch', the magazine
of the Swiss Costume Society.
The weekend will
begin with craft workshops, ,Culture Corner' and a getacquainted dance on
Friday evening. Saturday is given over to dance workshops, a banquet and a
gala celebration of the Swiss national holiday The weekend ends with lunch
on Sunday, after a review session in the morning.
Although the
organization has striven to provide German folk dance groups in the US with
a common repertoire and information about the cultural history of the
various German regions, both within Germany and the German communities
outside its border, many of the members are of Swiss descent and there is a
large interest in Swiss dance and folklore.
The workshop will
include dances from all the Swiss language regions, German, French, Italian
